Student Services Building Art Competition
Texas A&M University announces a competition to commission art pieces for two locations in its new Student Services building on the main campus. The building is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by October 2019.

The commission competition is open to artists (or artist teams) to design and fabricate site-specific artworks for two locations. The first is located on the first floor at the southwest corner of the building. The second will be located on the third floor in the public reception area at the south end of the building. The intent of the project is to have high impact art pieces that will energize the spaces. A jury will determine which space is assigned to each winning artist.
The competition will be in two parts. First, artists should submit resumes that reflect their ability to handle a project of this size plus images of previous public art projects they have completed. A jury will narrow down the artists to two or three per location. These artists will then create a concept proposal package to include drawings and/or maquettes for their art piece, an artist statement, materials list, fabrication timeline and budget breakdown. After a jury narrows the submissions down to one artist per location, the second phase begins. The winning artist(s) would then work with representatives from the university, the architects, and the construction firm to finalize the concept, and ultimately install it.
Designs may not protrude from the recessed area more than 10 inches per safety and ADA codes.

Location #1: First Floor Art Wall West
- The art space is a recessed area measuring approximately 9 feet 8 inches by 11 feet (marked 1/AW-03 on the plans). If desired, this recessed area can be eliminated to create a flat wall surface. Plywood backing is planned to be added to increase the load bearing to approx. 100 lbs. per square foot. If the artist desires, the installation may continue on to a secondary wall (2/AW-03).
Location #2: Third Floor Art Wall South
- The art space is a wall measuring approximately 11 feet by 32 feet (marked 3/AW-o4 on the plans). Plywood backing is planned to be added to increase the load bearing to approx. 100 lbs. per square foot.
**N.B. Data and power may be a possibility for both locations if decided upon early enough in the construction schedule but is not currently planned for either site.

Award Phase One
A $4,000 stipend will be given to each semi-finalist to develop their concepts, which includes travel to present their concepts to the jury.
Award Phase Two
- $90,000 commission for Location #1
- $150,000 commission for Location #2
Commission awards are intended to cover all artist costs including, but not limited to, artist travel, fabrication, shipping, installation, engineering review (if necessary), etc. The University will provide lighting, signage, personnel lift, ladders, or scaffolding if needed for installation.
