All That Glitters…Might Be Gold

This exhibition examines how nature, science, and human ingenuity have been used to formulate color in art, which is a fascinating and evolving study. As you take in your own unique view of the art—paintings, ceramics, glass—even a medieval illuminated manuscript—on display, some of the history, science, and stories behind the colors you perceive will be explored. 
 

Inside the Exhibition

Bowl, Rose. Peachblow (or Peach Bloom). Shiny finish blown body pink (bottom) to deep red top. Gold enameled decoration of pines & cherry blossoms. Body cased white. Gold enameled rim. Decoration descends from rim.
Vase. Favrile. Byzantine (Tel el-Amanra). Blown yellow glass with brown flashing. Neck area applied above body shoulders. Neck has overlapping brown and green zigzag decoration. Gold iridized. Wafer pontil prunt.
Vase. Yellow Jade, Aurene. Yellow body with platinum aurene ivy decoration. Gold aurene interior and base. Shape # 592.
Vase. Favrile. Byzantine (Tel el-Amarna). Green iridescent glass flashed white on the interior. Dark green glass ring applied to top of body with iridized ring connector. Zigzag (Byzantine) pattern worked on top ring in iridized material and white. Wafer pontil.
Blue aurene. Sachet with cover. Blue Aurene on cobalt. Blue aurene melon ribbed body with three ribbed feet and scallop squash-shaped top. Shape #2701
Liqueur pot. Acid etched. Thin blue on flint. Intricate ivy vines twirl between geometric eastern-inspired tapestry design.
Gourd vase. Verre de Soie. Pompeian Swirl. Air-trap mold-blown clear body with blue and red swirl pattern. Bluer at top; redder at bottom. Cased white.
Vase. Mother of Pearl (MOP)/Pearl Satin glass. Mold blown, clear and deep purple in swirl pattern. Four-cornered, mellon ribbed body with two applied clear handles with amber stain. Gold enamel decorated all-over with ferns, branches, and flowers, with red/orange highlights in flowers. Gold enamel on rim.

Washington Square Park in New York City, NY on a rainy day. Figures promenade along fenced paths, some with umbrellas and walking dogs. The background depicts the Washington Square Arch at the park's northern gate. Beyond the arch are the iconic red row homes of Greenwich Village and One Fifth Avenue, an important Art Deco apartment building.

In the foreground, two little girls play on the beach, wearing white dresses with pink bows in their hair. Other children play along the shore and a couple walk toward the background, under a parasol. A forest of fur trees fills the background.
