Texas A&M University Competition to Commission Public Art Installation

Texas A&M University announced an open competition in January 2021 for professional artists or artist teams to commission a site specific public art installation honoring Texas A&M University’s mascot, Reveille, a Rough Collie breed dog. Three semi-finalists were identified, and the winning artist team of Jimm Scannell and Dawn Agnew Mundell was announced in August.

Reveille has been the mascot of Texas A&M since 1931, and she is known as the First Lady of Aggieland. Miss Rev, as she is affectionately called, is the highest-ranking member in the Corps of Cadets and wears five silver diamonds (the Corps Commander wears four). Learn more about Reveille.

The installation will reside on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas, in a high traffic area outside the university’s football stadium, Kyle Field, and near the resting place of all former Reveille mascots, Reveille Memorial.

Interested artists and artist teams were asked to submit their entries with a résumé and images of three different previous public art projects by the March 31, 2021 deadline. Artists were asked to consider figurative and other interesting elements as part of their concept and the Aggie Core Values of respect, excellence, leadership, loyalty, integrity, and selfless service. Accepting Entries: Deadline March 31, 2021

Artists or artist teams will submit résumés that reflect their ability to handle a project of this size, in addition to images of three previous public art projects they have completed. Deadline March 31, 2021.

Jury Selection: Week of April 5, 2021

The jury will narrow down the artist pool and contact the semi-finalists. Those not making it to the next round will not be contacted.

Finalist Presentations: Week of July 12, 2021

Three semi-finalists will each be awarded a $5,000 stipend to develop their concepts and will either present their concepts online or travel to College Station, Texas, to present their concepts to the jury (pending pandemic status). Semi-finalists will create a concept proposal package to include drawings and/or maquettes for their art piece, an artist statement, materials list, fabrication timeline, and budget breakdown.

Winner Selected: August 2021

The jury will select one winning artist or artist team to construct the commemorative public art installation. The winning artist or artist team will work with representatives from the university to finalize the concept.

Installation: TBA

After concepts are approved and contracts are signed, the winning artist or artist team will install the art. A $200,000 commission will be awarded; commission awards are intended to cover all artist costs including, but not limited to, artist travel, fabrication, shipping, installation, engineering review (if necessary), etc. The university will provide lighting, signage, personnel lift, ladders, or scaffolding, if needed for installation.
