Illustrating Myth, Legend and the Divine
June 10–Aug. 31, 2025 (Opening ahead of schedule on June 6)
Forsyth Galleries | Memorial Student Center, MSC 2428
Whether it is gods, legendary figures from history or fantastical monsters inspired by stories from the past or crafted in the modern day, immortalizing these figures in art has resonated across time and cultures. For centuries, different forms of art have provided a range of outlets for exploring and expressing these rich narratives and have even afforded some stories the ability to evolve and transcend time and place.
Through a variety of media including sculptures, paintings, glass and pottery, important real and mythical figures have been artistically immortalized to provide a window into the values, beliefs and aesthetics of the societies that created them. Their appeal remains timeless as they continue to inspire wonder and reflection in modern audiences. The artists in this exhibition have been inspired by mythological narratives, exploring themes of creation, heroism, love and the supernatural. Their ability to capture these moments in their chosen medium opens a window into tale and awakens the viewer’s imagination.
