4 Seasons | 5 Senses

Sept. 30–Dec. 15, 2023
Forsyth Galleries | Memorial Student Center, MSC 2428

SENSES
The senses are our source for vital knowledge about the objects and events in this world, as well as for insights into our private sensations and feelings. Each sense is unique in terms of subjective feelings and regarding the wide range of information that it yields, yet each sense interacts with the others to produce experiences that cannot be reduced to a single sense. In addition, our sensory perception reflects our personal history, our culture and the way our brain has learned to combine and experience sensory inputs. Artists have explored how to depict and evoke the senses through their work for centuries; a selection of art that is designed to both stimulate and fascinate the senses will be on view.

SEASONS
The iconography of the seasons, from young people frolicking in lush fertile landscapes to the elderly sitting amidst a barren snow-laden landscape, has been used by artists to reference the cycle of life, showcase change and reveal the evolution of everything from fashion designs to politics. An examination of how spring, summer, autumn and winter have been used by artists to remind us we are all part of multiple seasonal cycles can be found in the Forsyth Small Gallery.
